The Guide

With its sky-high house prices, Clifton is undoubtedly the "posh end" of Bristol. For student life, Whiteladies Road is the centre of activity, with a host of upmarket bars, eateries and trendy nightclubs.

While Clifton is a favourite area for Bristol University students, its nightlife attracts many UWE students to live there too, however be warned that it is very inaccessible to UWE by public transport.

When many people think of Bristol one of the first things which comes to mind is the Suspension Bridge, unsurprisingly as guide books, University prospectuses and corporate adverts all clamour to use Brunel's great bridge to sell Bristol. The bridge is undoubtedly Bristol's most famous tourist site, and if you take a walk along it you will see why. The bridge not only seems to defy the laws of physics but it also gives you a spectacular view out across the Avon Gorge.

If you fancy a view of the bridge itself, stroll over to the Clifton Downs. The Downs is a large grassy park which has a proud history of sport, from its past horse races and wrestling, to the football and cricket leagues which thrive today alongside less formal activities like kite-flying, sun-bathing and drinking Pimms and lemonade.

Bristol Zoo is home to the world's first 'Twilight' zone, as well as insect and reptile houses, an aquarium, several aviaries and a world-class seal and penguin 'coast'. Ducks swim on the lakes, while the lake islands are home to gorillas, monkeys, lemurs and pelicans. The Zoo has come under fire recently from the Bristol Animal Rights Coalition, who are angered at animal captivity and the Zoo's expansion and plans to open a second zoo in 2006.

Student life in Bristol wouldn't be complete without the Coronation Tap (www.drinkaware.com). At the weekend the Corry Tap is crammed with students, due to its reputation for its lethal Exhibition Cider, served in halfpints due to its strength.
