Due to their affordable accommodation and location - around halfway between the City Centre and the Frenchay campus - Ashley Down and Horfield are favourite student areas. The area is well served by the 70 bus route and is well within walking/cycling distance of the campus.
Horfield is home to the Memorial Stadium, home to Bristol Rovers, one of the city's two Football League sides. Rovers are in the second division which means that their ticket prices can be affordable to students, with concessions starting at £5. The stadium is also home to Bristol Rugby, who last season finished 11th in the Guinness Premiership. If you're after a post-match drink, stop in at the Ashley Arms, frequented by many locals. Students in the area tend to head down towards Gloucester Road for a drink, the Inn on the Green, and the Tinto Lounge are also popular student hang-outs.
The area also offers the newly-revamped Horfield Leisure Centre, offering two swimming pools, a state of the art, fully air conditioned health and fitness suite, a multipurpose sports hall, four squash courts, and a number of classes including aerobics, yoga, line dancing and martial arts.
