Florian Mertens
Personal Profile
I am a final year student doing Information Systems at the faculty of CEMS. I did a placement the year before at a marketing company called Western Business Publishing. My greatest passion in University is supporting the diversity of the student population, as well as playing and developing with new computer software. During my free time I fly gliders, play guitar, or go out and enjoy the city center's social life.
I am currently a representative on the Faculty Student Council, Student Representative Council, Academic Board, Diversity committee, a dozen more committees, and I am (Vice-) President of two societies.
Manifesto
VOTE Florian Mertens, #1 for Representative President !
My strongest ground for standing is my determination not to leave this university before I can bring out my three year representational knowledge as a benefit for all of us!
As the current University representative on councils such as the Student Representative Council, the Academic Board and Diversity Committee, and with a vast history of three year involvement in students' union related councils, I have all the necessary knowledge and experience to be a Representative President. This year I have improved the resources for students with a diverse background, I have assisted several environmental groups, and I am (Vice-) President of two societies. With this foundation, I seek to consolidate the Union's status and improve your lives further with the following aims:
To appreciate the diversity of the student population and the need for fair policies and methods,
- To coordinate groups of common interests for an effective Union,
- To continue lobbying the First bus services for improvement and progress alternative transport methods,
- To reduce the car parking problems for students that can't perform academically well without a car,
- To assist the representatives and representative coordinators with strengthening the University relationships,
- To suggest gradual approaches to green alternatives,"¢ To enhance online resources and web communities,
- To advance and support the standards of the student experience and the faculty merging process.
- To compete with other Universities' standards and seek ways to become better.

Personal Profile
First of all, do not forget my promise to UWE, 'I will be there for ALL students.' Ok then, myself. I am simply a friendly, open, honest guy who wants to work his a*se off for you lot. I have been through a lot of real life stuff in my 19 years, (But who hasn't) This has given me the confidence and ability that will help me to push the students' corner. I am an approachable person, who really cares about UWE and I have been told I smile a lot, (look at my posters!) So remember students, Vote Dom!
Manifesto
Ok, What will I do as SRC President? Why vote Dom?
Well I could tell you the usual stuff about what I do/ have done"¦. I am involved in the Students Union, write for the student newspaper and I am chair of HLSS student council. But if I am honest, I would have to say the reason I am standing is that I am convinced UWE is a great University. But there is so much more to do. The problem is UWE treats us students as just a number. The powers that be are so concerned with research, business and image they forget about their 30.000 students.
So much more attention needs to be given to transport; the awful service of First, the state of the car parks and the rubbish facilities for cyclists all need sorting.
Timetabling is a joke; there needs to be a complete review of deadlines, exam dates and day to day learning. More money needs to be obtained for our Students Union to make it stronger and more influential. Bristol University's Student Union receives much more funding for a third of the students we have.
Being a multi-campus university makes us great. But smaller campus should not be referred to as 'satellite' campus of Frenchay, but as centres of excellence in their fields. Also the need for more facilities for the student village, personal tutors, more computers in libraries and more recycling all need sorting.
I am the student to do it. Simple.

I am currently in my third year studying Business and Law. I am lucky enough to have been brought up in Penzance, which is a town on the southern tip of Cornwall, surrounded by the sea. I've been playing both acoustic and electric guitar for around 8 years, so my musical taste ranges from The Killers, Foo Fighters and Tenacious D to Dire Straits, The Who and Pink Floyd. In my first year I lived in Favell House, which was"¦ well an experience. I then moved to Redland for my second year, and am now near the infamous Gloucester Road.
Manifesto
While living in Redland in my second year, it became rather apparent that the buses simply didn't want to turn up. Often when they did, they were late and completely rammed with people. The fact that Bristol has a massive congestion problem is not a secret and the buses can't magically get around the traffic. However, problems such as rammed buses could be alleviated by providing a double layer bus rather than a single. Simple! A complaints procedure needs to be set up to let First know where the problems are. I would set up a meeting with First buses to establish a communication network, perhaps in the form of an online form, which UWE students could use to report problems. This way, problems could be solved when they arose. This would be my first objective.
Secondly, car parking at Frenchay is a complete battle ground! At rush hour, many students are filling out pension forms due to the wait! Again, this isn't something that can be fixed over night, but substantial persuasive pressure needs to be applied in order to get the problem solved. While car sharing is a great idea, it's not going to fill in the holes in Car Park 20!
I have many more ideas, but I need you to use your vote wisely. Vote for me, and get a 'straight to the point' guy into action. No messing. Let's sort it all out, and go for a beer. Happy Days!
