Rhiannon Biss
Personal Profile
My name is Rhiannon, I'm 21 and have just started an adult nursing degree. But! Don't let my tender years fool you.
You will sense that I am a bit unique because I did not take the customary gap year, I took one that lasted 21/3 years travelling and in voluntary placements! I'm relatively new to University life and because of that I can provide a fresh outlook and represent new ideas from everyone. I am sociable and I think I am a good listener. I enjoy working with people and getting involved with the things people enjoy.
Manifesto
I'm the best person for this role as I am really passionate about getting involved at UWE. I believe all students have a right to discuss how their University and Union are run and I would like to be that "voice". If I can't answer the question or solve a problem I will soon find someone who can! I want the students to feel that they are represented and that they are able to understand that they can be involved as little or as much as they like. I also want everyone to know that when they leave University life they can look back and say to themselves "I enjoyed that!"
Organising events and entertainments for students will be something I would really like to get concerned with, especially with the rising numbers of students each year. This includes Freshers Week, as a beginning for all students to start off in the right frame of mind knowing that the next 3 or more years for them will be enjoyable. I want each individual to easily see what's on, who's there, see as many different types of activities as possible, get into them if they want at any level and even try to encompass off campus students to help as well. I can help organise small functions to provide volunteers and fun events to full-on team charity functions involving many people. The choice should be theirs and it should be fun.
Campus Chairs
About the Role: Part Time Voluntary. Responsibilities: Chair of the Site Committee, helps organises social events for the campus, represent the views of the students from the site at the Activities Council
Campus Chair St Matt's
Nadia Arancio & Samuel Jones
Personal Profile
My name is Nadia. I'm an Anglo-Italian Film and CMS student. I love intelligent conversations, and coffee (this is not without a hint of irony)
My name is Sam. I'm a first year Media and Cultural studies student. I'm interested in Media and Politics, also socialising and consuming vast quantities of beer.
Manifesto
We would like to encourage more students to actively participate in the running of the Union. We intend to increase the awareness of the nature and role of Student Reps and use Campus Committee to support them. This should result in an improvement of the profile of our campus within the union, and hopefully strengthen the voice of St Matts' students, lobbying the SU to deal with issues that affect and come from the students of this campus.
This process should also strengthen the position of students within the University and might eventually result in a successful lobby of issues such as security and transport.
On a lighter note, we also intend to diversify the range of entertainments available on campus, in order to make the SU Bar become a home for a more diverse range of students. This will include investigating course-related events and Arcade/Consoling gaming.
We would also like to increase the links with local cultural organisations outside UWE. This will widen the student experience both within the University and outside of it.
Campus Chair Frenchay
Lewis Winks
Personal Profile
I am a first year Geography and Environmental Management student, living up on Frenchay campus in the new student village. I spent 3 years traveling and working before coming to university, from the wilds of Wales to the turbulence of Bristol it's been interesting but I like to be kept busy.
I am lucky to have spent a year living up on frenchay, it's meant I've managed to explore and feel at home here, instead of just being my campus, it's where I live. So feel I have a familiarity- something to draw upon, hopefully, as your campus chair.
Manifesto
TRANSPORT
As campus chair, I will continue to campaign for everyones common grievance- the buses. Most people agree that transport is in a state in Bristol and UWE's involvement is incredibly important. Students and staff rely on buses to get to and from campus- including those who live at Frenchay going out at night.
The cycling and driving facilities on Frenchay are also in dire need of improvement- this means listening to the students and staff that use these amenities. I propose an overview group of car drivers, cyclists and bus users to discuss (and act!) on these issues. The campaigning that has been taking place will continue into next year - and until well overdue changes are made.
ENTERTAINMENTS
Another issue I feel strongly about is the lack of entertainments on campus during the week. I feel that for a campus with 3 large bars more can be done up at frenchay, perhaps some live acoustic music in core 24 at lunch time?
ENVIRONMENTAL
I believe that UWE has an obligation to provide top notch facilities to accommodate recycling at frenchay. The university is doing a good job but there is always room for improvement. I would love to see the cafes, bars and student village composting!
Finally, I would like to say that communication with students is paramount, and it's YOUR needs that matter. So, by talking to you, positive changes can take place.
Thanks for reading.
Campus Chair Glenside
Louise Ellicott & Dave Anderson (Jobshare)
Personal Profile
Hi Folks, Hoff here!! I'd like to introduce your 'wanna-be' Glenside Site Chair's, Lolly and Dave! Both 2nd yr students studying Nursing and Physiotherapy, they love their courses and G-side has a big part of their hearts. The SU is a second home to them (Either one usually in residence). They're both friendly, approachable and are already actively involved in many events on campus including the legendary G-side Angels! They're standing as joint Site Chair for G-side as they and I believe they can bring something more and encourage the growing popularity of the SU!
Swim Safe Peeps! Hoff xXx
Manifesto
So why would we be the best people for the job? Well, we're an enthusiastic, helpful and amusing duo, committed to making G-side the best it can be for all students who use it and also, dedicated to encouraging those who are not regulars to give it a go!!
Having run Bars and Kids clubs our organisational skills for this position are well honed. We both feel there is a need for students to sense they are a part of the SU and therefore want to open up Site Committee meetings up to any student wishing to attend thus expanding the avenues for ideas. We want students to be able to approach these meetings and make suggestions for activities/events they want to happen and then help put these in to play!!
Many students will know us from our days spent Angeling and entertaining the student body, (something we would strongly recommend to any student) this experience has brought us in to contact with many students and its success has encouraged us to campaign for a more student involved Union.
The popularity of the Glenside Union has grown considerably over the last 12 months and we, as a double act want to continue the well laid grounding set down by the 'Legends' that are Clare and Vikki and many of their predecessors!!
The future of our SU lays in your hands guys. Use the force and feel safe in the knowledge that by voting for us you're also voting for yourself.
Emily Bond & Katy Dale
Personal Profile
We are Flash and Superwoman (according to thesuperheroequiz.com) and who better to represent your union than two ACTUAL superheroes?!
Our supernatural qualities include:
- Approachable, as your peers
- Reliable, as event co-ordinators and trustworthy in our roles
- Innovative ideas, to keep the Glenside social occasions desirable
- Team workers, to listen, support and act upon your ideas
- Friendly, to keep students positive and happy about their lifestyle on campus.
Having been sent to planet earth as a team, we work well together and look forward to the challenges that lay ahead of us in this post.
Manifesto
We like to think of ourselves as approachable, relaxed but reliable members of the student body who will empathise and sympathise with all current and new students. We both have experience with leadership roles and associated teamwork, including scout leadership. We are good communicators and would be able to liaise with staff, students and external colleagues. Currently, the student union is competent at fulfilling the more social side of student life and we want to maintain this, but with a more balanced approach to 'work and play'. We understand that each student is different and want to introduce events that will appeal to the diverse student interests, eg a chill out evening with relaxed music or live bands. To make this possible, promotion and advertising is paramount. This could be achieved by alternative methods other than posters, eg screensavers on TV's, announcements at lunchtime, and 'dates for your diary' brochures. The angels are the hub of the Glenside student union and we feel that their efforts should be rewarded. We plan to arrange more events for the angels to socialise together and form friendship frameworks within the group. This will reinforce team spirit and keep the angels as a solid unit throughout the whole of the academic year. Freshers weeks are significant events in our term of office and we wish to make them as enjoyable as possible for every student as we are well aware that it is the fundamental starting point of university life.
UWESU Chair of Meeting
About the Role: Start Date: Academic Year 07/08. Responsibiliites : To act as Chair at Union General Meeting, to ensure the smooth running of the meetings.
Bill Boon
I am the best choice to be the UWESU's chair of meetings because I'm experienced and capable of ensuring they run smoothly and productively. General meetings have a two hour cut of point. This is undemocratic and as chair I'll allow them to continue until all motions have been discussed and resolved. General meetings are the most important events in the Student Union's calendar as they allow us to shape our union. The chair thus has a huge responsibility to ensure meetings are successful. I can take on this responsibility and make sure meetings provide the vital role they have.
Nisha Khurana
Part of my job as being SRC Vice President consists of chairing 'Student Rep Support Team' and being the Deputy Chair for 'Student Representative Council'. As well as being fully trained, I have sat through many meetings for the Union, University and NUS, and have seen many good and bad practices displayed by Chairs. This has enabled me to have a good understanding of how a Chair of Meetings is expected to behave, which involves being firm and fair to all present at the meeting and its proceedings.
