Law 7: The Conditions of Elected Office

Eligibility for Office

7.1

(i) all students registered on programmes of study with the University and who are full members of the Union are entitled to hold office as a student representative.

(ii) a student representative ceasing to be a registered student of the University or ceasing to be a full member of the Union shall immediately cease to be entitled to serve in such capacity and will be deemed to have resigned.

(iii) a student representative subject to disciplinary sanction in accordance with Law 3 may be subject to a sanction of removal from office and shall immediately cease to be entitled to serve is such capacity.

(iv) a student representative who is absent without apology to the secretary from three consecutive meetings of the council or committee on which they serve shall cease to be entitled to serve in such capacity and will be deemed to have resigned.

Allowances

7.2

(i) members holding office as student representatives shall be entitled to receive allowances for their time spent in serving in such capacity in accordance with the following provisions.

(ii) each student member of Faculty Student Councils , the Student Representative Council , the Sports Council , the Activities Council , and the Board of Trustees shall be entitled to receive an allowance for their time spent in attending training for office.

(iii) each student member of Faculty Student Councils , the Student Representative Council , the Sports Council , the Activities Council , and the Board of Trustees shall be entitled to receive an allowance for their time spent in attending the meetings of the council or board on which they serve.

(iv) the chairperson of each Faculty Student Councils , the Chairperson of the Student Representative Council , the Chairperson of the Sports Council , and the Chairperson of the Activities Council shall also be entitled to receive an allowance for their time in preparing for and enacting the business of the bodies on which they serve.

(v) a procedure by which such time shall be recorded and such allowances claimed and paid shall be developed and maintained by the Board of Trustees .

(vi) such allowances shall be a sum per hour equivalent to the hourly rate as applied to students employed as temporary staff of the Union

(vii) such allowances shall also attract a holiday allowance as per the process as applied to students employed as temporary staff of the Union.

(viii) the maximum allowance that shall be claimed for any one week shall be 37 hours.

(ix) students holding office as student representatives shall also be entitled to claim an allowance for expenses in accordance with Law 8 .

Removal from Office

7.3

(i) members holding office as student representatives may be removed from office by vote of the members and will cease to be entitled to serve in such capacity with immediate effect.

(ii) removal from office of the chairperson of a Faculty Student Councils shall be subject to a motion of no confidence being debated and approved by a two-thirds majority of those present at a meeting of that Faculty Student Councils .

(iii) removal from office of the Chairperson of the Student Representative Council shall be subject to a motion of no confidence being debated and approved by a two-thirds majority of those present at a meeting of the Student Representative Council .

(iv) removal from office of the Chairperson of the Sports Council shall be subject to a motion of no confidence being debated and approved by a two-thirds majority of those present at a meeting of the Sports Council .

(v) removal from office of the Chairperson of the Activities Council shall be subject to a motion of no confidence being debated and approved by a two-thirds majority of those present at a meeting of the Activities Council .

(vi) removal from office of the chairperson or member of a Site Activities Committee or Residence Activities Committee shall be subject to a motion of no confidence being debated and approved by a two thirds majority of those present at a meeting of that Site Activities Committee or Residence Activities Committee .

(vii) members holding office as student representatives may resign their office by writing to the secretary of the council or committee on which they serve.
