Financial Help

Let's face it, money is a problem for most students, from the maze of filling in forms to get your loan and fees through to managing the little you have to survive on when you arrive.

We don't want to paint a gloomy picture, as University life can be the best time of your life but we do want you to think before you spend. The important factor to remember is that you will have to make a little money go a long way.

Sitting down and planning your budget may not be fun but it is essential if you are to survive as a student. Make yourself aware of what extra funds you are eligible for and apply for them in good time.

THE University Student Handbook is an invaluable guide to what you may be entitled to. For example:

  • DfES Access to Learning Fund
  • Summer Hardship Fund
  • Postgraduate Bursaries
  • Foundation Art Bursaries
  • NHS Hardship Fund
  • Secondary Shortage Subject Scheme.

Additional financial support provided by the University to those students in need are also identified in the University Student Handbook.

These include:

  • Short Term Loan Fund
  • Tuition Fees Remission
  • Part-Time Tuition Fee Waiver
  • Nursery Fees Remission

Application forms for most of these funds are available from the Advice Centre or your campus office if you are not at Frenchay. Some funds on the other hand will require an appointment so you will need to contact Student Advice and Welfare Services on 0117 32 82822, email saws@uwe.ac.uk or visit their website: www.uwe.ac.uk/advice/money/

The Students' Union Advice Centre can help you complete the forms for funds such as the Access to Learning Fund.

We also have a softare program entitled 'funderfinder'. This is a database of grant making trusts and charities and by using the program you will be able to find out which ones you are eligible to apply to and potentially receive some extra funds.

UNIAID also have a useful on-line calculator which allows you to find out how much you should be entitled to, what you will be spending in outgoings and most importantly, what is left! Take a look at: www.studentcalculator.org.uk
