UWE Students' Union - enhancing the student experience - www.uwesu.org

End of Term 1 Report by Sports President 2006-07

A round up from Kat Smart on all of her work between 16th Nov to 21st Dec 2006

Strategic Planning

We are currently producing a strategic plan for the students union - hopefully you would have heard about this. So we have had many very productive (all day) meetings regarding it. We hope to have a first draft by February 2007.

Centre for sport meeting

I had a meeting with one of the deputy vice-chancellors and the Head of sport and recreation regarding a few issues that had arisen regarding the centre for sport. Since, I and the Head of sport and recreation are now having regular monthly meetings.

Sports Executive

We have, since the last sports council, had a very productive meeting regarding various issues, such as the varsity series, budget allocations for the second term and ideas for Result.

Varsity Series

Planning has begun for the various varsities. The dates are:

  • Rugby: Wednesday 28th February 2007, at the Memorial Stadium
  • Football: Wednesday 7th March, at Manor Farm
  • Rowing: Saturday 28th April 2007, Harbour side
  • Varsity day: Wednesday 21st March 2007, at various venues in Bristol

Team Photos

I have confirmed the team photos to be on Wednesday 14th February 2007, please start making members of your clubs aware of this

Sports Awards Dinner

Sports awards dinner is Thursday 3rd May at the Marriott, City Centre.

Trustees Meeting

We have had a trustees meeting where the main topic was the current financial situation of the union. Currently a recovery plan is being put into place. I'm sure you are aware of the situation by now as all budgets across all areas are being cut, including clubs and societies.

Site Surgeries

I have been to Hartpury with two of the other presidents, and St matts and Glenside for site surgeries. This time gives us an opportunity to approach the students at the different campuses and ask them about any problems or issues that they want to bring up with us.

Constitutional Review

We are currently carrying out a constitutional review, this is an on-going process where we are looking at amendments that need to be made to the constitution.

Hartpury forms

I have authorised the first payment of the Hartpury transport reimbursement. Three forms in total were received for this academic year. This motion will be reviewed at the last sports council of this year.

Budget allocations for term two

The budget applications from clubs for the second term are still being looked into. Unfortunately due to the financial situation of the students union and the budget cuts this will take longer than usual. This is due to limited funds available.
To put it into perspective for you, the total over terms two and three all clubs (after it being filtered once) have asked for is £17, 175.50. The amount that I have to divide over all clubs over the second and third terms is £8,300. Please be aware I will allocate in a fair way, at the moment it looks as though it will be percentage based.
