UWESU Publications have a long a distinguished history, Kal Wright-McCusih (Publications Editor 2005-06) delved into the publications archive to provide the following summary of our publishing history.

The 70s and 80s

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

It all started a long time ago in a decade far, far away known as the 70s well to be exact, a time when students' really were the consciousness of society and put on all kind of silly clothes to show what individual free thinking chaps they really were, anyhoo back to task: free thinking chaps that they were the students of Bristol started a newspaper called Bacus in 1972 that was to last a whopping 17 years - maybe their was something in free thinking! Bacus was a newspaper for all of Bristol and was produced by Bristol Polytechnic (UWE before UWE) Students and University of Bristol Students.

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

According to the history books Bacus was originally meant to be called Banus which stood for Bristol Area National Union of Students. Although it is unclear exactly what role the NUS played in the paper as it was funded jointly between Bristol Polytechnic Students Union and University of Bristol Students Union. How they got from Banus to Bacus it a bit of a mystery, although many theories are banded around, the most convincing/fun of which is as follows; it was named after the Greek God of Alcohol: Bacchus - spelt wrong and booze related, sounds like student logic to me!

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

By no means did Bacus dominate the student publications of Bristol. At BPSU alone three Newsletter style publications went out between 1977 and 1988: Ferret, The Scam and The Bog Paper. These developed in complexity over the years and were practically magazine standard towards the end with hundreds of issue's under their collective belts.

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

During the last few years of Bacus' newspaper format, all was not well, BPSU and UBU were in financial trouble add this to Bristol students not feeling the paper represented them and you have got a recipe for a funding cut. UBU pulled out of its support for the paper opting to start its own publications.

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

All this disenchantment meant that students set up rival publications such as Cosmopoly Magazine to meet student's and BPSU's communication needs. When Bacus Newspaper finally lost backing from UBU in a Union General Meeting BPSU took sole ownership of the publication. Bacus editorial staff unwilling to yield the legacy of Bacus reincarnated the paper as a magazine combined with Cosmopoly as a centre section.

design/standard/templates/content/datatype/view/ezxmltags/paragraph.tpl

It seems the tryst did not last as Cosmopoly and Bacus forged out in their respective directions again in 1991. Cosmopoly did not stand the test of time and came to an end in 1992 around the same time the Bristol Polytechnic became the mighty University of the West of England we know today. It would seem that as BPSU became UWESU, publications were streamlined down to a single publication. Bacus went from strength to strength as the dominant union publication, sporting some of the craziest front covers known to the student press for a further 9 years.

Recent History

In 1998 Bacus truly came to an end and was re-branded with the more relevant name WestWorld. WestWorld represented a leap in professionalism for UWESU publications and over the next 5 years was awarded Guardian Student Media Awards for design while also undertaking a format change to a distinctive square shape. During this time UWESU also put together mini-publications such as Way Out West and WestWorld Express which carried with them vouchers and special offers for students as well as diaries of UWESU events.

In 2003 following a successful trial of a newspaper format publication The Hard Times, it was decided to scrap WestWorld in favour of a newspaper format publication. The new publication Western Eye was implemented as it would be more economical than a magazine and a more appropriate format of communication for the Students' Union; it was also thought that a larger team of student contributors could be involved with a newspaper as opposed to a magazine.

WestWorld was not gone for long however and was bought back in 2004 to cater for the specific aspects a magazine brings to Student Media. Western Eye UWESU's flagship news publication has gone from strength to strength, increasing its page count, and media team participation. Western Eye is now in its fourth year of production and is showing no signs of slowing down: In 2006 Western Eye went full colour and integrated WestWorld as a supplement.
